好萊塢40年來德高望重、最受稱道演員基弗·薩瑟蘭（Kiefer Sutherland）父親1935年7月唐納德·薩瑟蘭出生加拿大新不倫瑞克父親弗雷德裏克·薩瑟蘭（Frederick Sutherland）壹位生意人14歲時候唐納德已經成為Bridgewater當地壹家電臺最年輕播音員和DJ進入多倫多大學學習工程和戲劇後來前往英國倫敦音樂和戲劇藝術學院學習1954年開始英國電視界和戲劇圈內亮相1963年首次登上倫敦戲劇舞臺《August for the People》壹劇中扮演角色同年出演過電視電影《Terry-Thomas》後薩瑟蘭贏得了第壹個重要電影角色恐怖片《活死人城堡》（Castello dei morti vivi Il）中巫師此後幾年陸續出演了《哈姆雷特》（Hamlet）、《貝茜·史密斯之死》（The Death of Bessie Smith）、《貝德福德軍變》（The Bedford Incident）等影視作品
1970年羅伯特·奧爾特曼（Robert Altman）執導影片《風流醫生俏護士》（M*A*S*H）讓唐納德壹夜成名雖然出演過《十二金剛》（The Dirty Dozen）、《花街殺人王》（Klute）、《威尼斯疑魂》（Don't Look Now）、《普通人》（Ordinary People）、《刀鋒冷》（Eye of the Needle）、《浴火赤子心》（Backdraft）、《六度分離》（Six Degrees of Separation）、《恐怖地帶》（Outbreak）、《殺戮時刻》（A Time To Kill）、《永無止境》（Without Limits）、《本能反應》（Instinct）、《偷天換日》（The Italian Job）、《冷山》（Cold Mountain）、《傲慢與偏見》（Pride & Prejudice）等眾多佳作唐納德卻從未獲得奧斯卡提名1995年憑借電視電影《X公民》（Citizen X）分別贏得金球和艾美獎2002年影片《戰爭之路》（Path to War）讓喜獲金球獎；
還多倫多上大學時薩瑟蘭認識了女演員路易絲·哈威克（Lois Hardwick）1959年兩人結為伉儷1966年離異同年與另壹名加拿大女星雪莉·道格拉斯（Shirley Douglas）結婚生下兒子基弗·薩瑟蘭（Kiefer Sutherland）4年後這段婚姻再度宣告失敗1972年唐納德與現妻子、法加女星弗蘭辛·拉奇特（Francine Racette）結為連理並壹直生活到現在。
