科學解釋：
NASA華裔科學家趙豐教授認為：後羿射日事件其實是壹次彗星撞擊地球事件，類似於1994年levy-9彗星撞擊木星事件的縮小版。因為彗星質地松散，當彗星被行星捕捉，在潮汐力作用下會發生解體成為壹串天體，所謂九日，正是彗星解體為9塊。
9塊天體進入地球大氣層後，因摩擦灼熱成為似“太陽”的發光發熱體，這便是山海經中“九日居下枝，壹日居上枝”。接著這些看似“太陽”的物體便會很快壹壹撞擊地球，因為彗星質地松散，撞擊行星後並不會留下明顯的隕石坑，所以隕落之處壹片焦黑泥爛，這便是山海經中“羿射九日，落為沃焦”的原因。
